New Homes and New Hopes:
Denver House1000 & All In Mile High
The Denver New Liberals have been alongside Denver’s Mayor, Mike Johnston, from day one.
Since taking office as Denver’s new mayor, Johnston has built coalitions with the Denver City Council and Denver’s residents to build new homes for unhoused residents of the Mile High City.
Within 5 months of taking office, Johnston, his team, as well as many members of the community were able to give more than 1,000 people new homes and hope through the House1000 initiative.
To achieve this, broadly speaking, Mayor Johnston:
Declared a state of emergency for the City of Denver.
Formed a coalition with the members of the City Council, neighborhood organizations, and residents themselves.
Used a multi-pronged approach of using existing housing options and building micro communities.
It was, and surely still will be, a bold and creative campaign – but it’s a campaign that’s already paid off. Just read what the Denver Post Editorial Board had to say about how Mayor Johnston has transformed downtown Denver through the campaign.
Now, the Denver Mayor has a goal of finding housing for an additional 1,000 unhoused people and a goal of building 3,000 affordable housing units.
